A must see in London for both young and young at heart is the British Museum. It is not just an architectural marvel but it is also a keeper of antiquities that has not only shaped British history but the worlds as well.

Some of the most popular pieces are not actually made of precious stones. One of this is the Rosetta Stone from Egypt that was used to decipher hieroglyphs. The Elgin Marbles can also be seen there. This is a collection of stone sculptures, architectural pieces and inscriptions. The Bog Man is a well-preserved cadaver found in the peat bogs of Ireland.

Other important pieces are the Rillaton gold cup, the mold gold cape and the Snettisham hoard of ingots, bracelets, torcs and coins. There is also the Vindolanda which are the oldest documents written by hand found in Britain. A treasure which the writer Roald Dahl made famous is the Mildenhall silverware for dining can also be seen here.

There are a lot more to see in the museum and one day is certainly not enough to appreciate everything. It is suggested that you research on the exhibits you want to see before your trip.

Walking around and craning your neck the whole day can be very tiresome. So take mini-breaks at the Court Restaurant. You might want to try their coffee or sandwiches.

You can get to the museum from tube stops in Holborn, Tottenham Court Road and Russell Square. The best times to visit is from 10 am to 5:30 pm on Sundays to Thursdays. This is also the schedule for Saturday. The museum opens until 8:30 pm on Fridays.

Even though the admission is free, donations from visitors are encouraged for its maintenance and upkeep.

Whatever your reasons maybe for your short stop in London, drop a visit at the British Museum. And more importantly, do not forget to see the sites related to the monarchy.
